At HiDe Flooring, we’re all about creating spaces with that “wow” factor. And when it comes to timeless elegance, nothing quite beats the distinctive zigzag pattern of a herringbone floor. From the modern appeal of luxury vinyl and laminate to the classic charm of engineered oak, the herringbone lays the foundation for a truly remarkable room. But getting it right? That’s where expertise, precision, and a bit of HiDe Flooring magic come in!

You might be thinking, “Can I really achieve that stunning herringbone look myself?” While the DIY spirit is admirable, successfully laying a herringbone floor, especially with different materials, requires an experienced touch to ensure the desired finish.

The Foundation of Flawless Herringbone: Preparation is Key

Regardless of whether you’re opting for vinyl, laminate, or engineered oak, the secret to a successful herringbone installation lies in meticulous preparation. This isn’t a step to rush – it’s the bedrock of your beautiful floor.

  • Subfloor Perfection: The first and most crucial step is ensuring your subfloor is perfectly level, clean, and dry. For concrete slabs, we’ll check for moisture and, if necessary, apply an appropriate underlay. Any undulations or unevenness will show through the finished floor, especially with the precise lines of a herringbone pattern. We often use a self-levelling screed (ITE Screed) to create that ideal, billiard-table flat surface.
  • Acclimatisation is Non-Negotiable: For laminate and especially engineered oak, allowing the flooring planks to acclimatise to the room’s temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours is vital. This prevents expansion or contraction after installation, which can lead to unsightly gaps or buckling.

The Professional Touch: Laying the Herringbone Pattern

This is where the artistry begins. The herringbone pattern relies on precise angles and consistent alignment to achieve that captivating visual flow.

  • Establishing the Centre Line: We always start by finding the true centre of the room and establishing a clear, straight chalk line. This becomes our guiding beacon for the entire installation. For herringbone, accuracy here is paramount, as even a slight deviation will become glaringly obvious across the entire floor.
  • The “V” Start: Unlike standard parallel installations, herringbone begins with a “V” shape, usually at a 45-degree angle to your guiding line. This initial setup is critical and dictates the direction and tightness of your pattern. We often dry-lay a few rows to ensure the pattern is flowing correctly before applying adhesive or engaging click systems.
  • Working Systematically: We work outwards from our central “V” line, ensuring each plank is perfectly aligned with its neighbours. For engineered oak, a high-quality wood adhesive is typically used, with each plank carefully set into place. For luxury vinyl tile (LVT), specific LVT adhesive is applied, and we ensure proper “tack” before placing the tiles. With herringbone laminate, which often features a click-lock system designed for this pattern, precision is key in engaging each plank securely.
  • Consistent Gaps (Where Applicable): For laminate and engineered oak, maintaining expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room is essential. These allow the floor to expand and contract naturally with changes in temperature and humidity, preventing issues like cupping or lifting. These gaps are then neatly concealed by skirting boards.
  • Cutting with Precision: Trimming planks to fit at the edges and around obstacles requires meticulous measurements and clean cuts. A quality saw and sharp blades are essential for a professional finish, preventing splintering, especially with engineered oak.
